A little background on whitehaven:

The port and town of Whitehaven sits on the west coast of Cumbria, near the Sellafield Nuclear Complex and just outside the Lake District National Park. With a coal mining history dating back to the 13th century, Whitehaven was the site of only the second pit to be sunk under the sea.

Known as Saltom Pit, it was built in 1729, and due to funding from the National Trust and the European Union, it is now a Scheduled Ancient and Historic Monument, still retaining much of the original structure and equipment. Whitehaven Harbour is another point of interest - with monies from the Millennium Project, the marina was expanded and the Beacon Museum was refurbished. In 2008, it was officially opened by the Queen and Prince Philip.
